How much a trip around the world costs, depends on your expectations like: do you fancy sleeping in luxurious resorts or are you happy staying at cheap hotels? Another option is buying second hand gear. Before you buy, make sure that the gear is in perfect condition. If not, it’s a no go.

If you’re traveling around the world on a budget, you best stay clear of luxurious hotels and fancy restaurants. The best thing to do when looking for accommodation is sleeping at cheap hotels. Another option is couch surfing. This allows adventurous travelers to sleep at people’s homes for nothing, though sometimes a small contribution can be asked for stuff like food. Another benefit of this kind of traveling, is that it's a great opportunity to meet locals who can show their guests around their city and travelers thus see lots of non-touristic things.

In Southeast Asia it is possible to eat for $1 per meal which boils down to about $3 a day for food. Travelers who eat at places where locals also eat or buy dinner at food stalls on the street, can even go below $1 per meal. But expect to pay a lot more in Western countries. Therefore, it is advisable to go to cheap destinations when traveling around the world on a budget.
