What are the costs of a trip around the world and what are cheap destinations? Traveling around the world does not need to be expensive, you can also do it on a budget!

How much a trip around the world costs, depends on your expectations like: do you fancy sleeping in luxurious resorts or are you happy staying at cheap hotels? Do you want to rent a car or travel by bus? It’s not possible to give exact numbers, but one thing is certain; the costs can be divided into two parts: cost before and costs during your trip around the world.

Costs Before You Start Your Trip Around the World

Airplane ticket

One of the biggest costs of such a trip is the airplane ticket. One option is buying an around the world ticket which allows multiple stops around the world.

These tickets can be purchased at a travel agency, but compare prices before booking a ticket. Sometimes it is actually cheaper to book flights directly at the airline company! No matter where you book it, expect to pay rates going from $1200 up to $1600 for one around the world ticket.

Vaccinations and medication

Vaccinations are advised or required for a lot of countries. These can include: yellow fever, rabies, hepatitis, malaria and much more. Prices of vaccinations vary between $10 and $60. It can also be necessary to take malaria pills and these don’t come cheap either. If you’re planning on visiting a lot of countries, set aside at least $600 of your budget for vaccinations and pills.

Check CDC’s website for more information about which vaccinations you’ll need for your trip around the world.

Gear

Travel gear like walking shoes, backpacks and camping gear can be very expensive. In order to keep down the lid on expenses, try to lend some of these things from friends or family. Another option is buying second hand gear. Before you buy, make sure that the gear is in perfect condition. If not, it’s a no go.

Costs While You’re Traveling Around the World

Accommodation

If you’re traveling around the world on a budget, you best stay clear of luxurious hotels and fancy restaurants. The best thing to do when looking for accommodation is sleeping at cheap hotels. Another option is couch surfing. This allows adventurous travelers to sleep at people’s homes for nothing, though sometimes a small contribution can be asked for stuff like food. Another benefit of this kind of traveling, is that it's a great opportunity to meet locals who can show their guests around their city and travelers thus see lots of non-touristic things.

Food

In Southeast Asia it is possible to eat for $1 per meal which boils down to about $3 a day for food. Travelers who eat at places where locals also eat or buy dinner at food stalls on the street, can even go below $1 per meal. But expect to pay a lot more in Western countries. Therefore, it is advisable to go to cheap destinations when traveling around the world on a budget.

Traveling around the world on a budget is easy for people who like to sleep in cheap hotels, on the couch of locals or in a tent on a campsite.
